Hokkaido is the second largest of the four major islands in the Japanese Archipelago. Even though it occupies about 20% of the total land area of Japan, Hokkaido has only about 5% of the total population, meaning less than 6 million inhabitants. In other words, this place has wide open spaces. Not only is this island sparsely populated, but also the residents of Hokkaido are people that have come from all over Japan, and a few foreign countries as well. As a result, the people who live in Hokkaido are much less clannish and more open and friendly than those people who live in the big cities on the main island of Honshu and in the other parts of "proper Japan."
Hokkaido also has a large number of 100% natural hot springs, many of them can be used free of charge or for a very minimal fee. In addition, there are hundreds of well-maintained and reasonably priced campgrounds all over the island. In several locations around the island there are natural springs of cold drinking water that many people come to regularly and fill up big plastic containers to take home with them.
In addition to all of the natural beauty, Hokkaido has an abundance of agriculture. Almost everything is grown here. Rice, corn, potatoes, eggplant, asparagus, tomatoes, carrots etc. as well as a large variety of fruits. There is also a lot of dairy farming as well as livestock and poultry cultivation. Oh, did I forget to mention the seafood? As you might well imagine, being surrounded by cold oceans on all sides, Hokkaido has some of the freshest and most delicious seafood available anywhere. I especially love sushi.
