What are the chances?

万が一のこともある。

Monday July 19th, 2004 was a national holiday, Marine Day.  It was also the date of yet another Chage and Aska concert at the Asahikawa Citizen’s Culture Hall.  This was the 4th consecutive year that C&A have come to the big hall and put on a live show.  My wife is a C&A fan club member so she can always get tickets and we go every year.

This year’s concert was especially interesting for several reasons.  First of all, we had the best seats ever. Row 9 seats 34 and 35.  Right up front and in the center section.  Even without binoculars, you could see everything very clearly.

Also, five rows in front of us and to the left was a mother, father and their two-year-old baby boy.  He was sitting on his father’s shoulders and trying to clap along with the music.  He was out of sync, but he seemed to enjoy the show and he never cried or made any loud noises. I have never seen a child that young at any concert ever before.   I wonder if he will become a big C&A fan in the future?

One more thing that was different, the backup band made a mistake for the first time that I can remember.  During the 2nd song, “Hang up the phone” the drummer missed a beat and the band was thrown into confusion for a few seconds.  They recovered nicely but the other band members were looking at each other and at the drummer and laughing to themselves.  Other than that, the concert was perfect and it lasted for about 3 hours.

After the concert, my wife and I were very hungry and thirsty so we walked into town to find a suitable place to eat and drink.  My first choice was my regular hangout, お座敷居酒屋 大舟, but they were already closed so my wife suggested that we go to 居酒屋 暮四季, but they were closed too.  Her next choice was ででん (3条6丁目アークヒルズビルBF), a place that she had been to only once before. Lucky for us, the place was open and we were able to get a table right away.  We got a table near the entrance and facing a private tatami room.

When we first sat down and ordered some beer, I noticed that the private tatami room was being prepared for a private party, but I didn’t think much about it.   As we were ordering from the menu, a crowd of people entered the private tatami room from the side entrance and began eating, drinking and talking in a joyful manner.  At first I didn’t think much about it, but when one of the sliding doors was opened by a waitress so she could deliver more food and drinks, my wife turned to me and said, “That’s Chage!”  I looked into the room and sure enough, Chage was sitting there looking right at me.  I smiled and gave him the peace sign with my right hand, and he smiled back at me.

What are the chances???  I mean even if we had been at the same restaurant and seated at different tables in different rooms, we would never have seen him there.  What is the probability that this could happen?  Almost zero.  But there he was. The one and only Chage of C&A, sitting right there in front of me at the same restaurant, on the same day of C&A’s only concert of this year in Asahikawa.  It was a one in a million chance, but it happened.  It was almost unbelievable.

After that brief moment, the sliding door was closed again, but later it was left open by just a crack and I could reconfirm my initial observation.  It was Chage, The Real McCoy.  Sitting right there in front of me in the next room.  He was wearing a white baseball cap of the Boston Red Sox with a red “B” and a blue brim.  Also, he was wearing a white baseball jersey of the same team with the big red letters “RED SOX” written right across the front of it.

I didn’t want to bother Chage and his entourage of about 10 other people so I politely waited until they had all left the restaurant before I got up to pay my bill and leave also.

Tonight’s C&A concert was excellent as they always are every year.

I hope C&A can come back to Asahikawa again next year.
