Rotating Sushi Counters

Rotating sushi counter restaurants are my favorite type of fast food. Not only are they quick and inexpensive, but also, sushi is much healthier than most other types of fast foods.
Most Americans don乫t eat a lot of pre-frozen raw fish and it is not easy to find sushi or sashimi for sale in the USA. In fact, I had never eaten sushi before I came to Japan so I乫m guessing that most other Americans haven乫t either.
If you were trying to explain to someone in English what a Rotating sushi counter restaurant is, the following description might be useful.
Sushi is a thin slice of raw fish resting upon a small chunk of vinegared rice with a pinch of green horseradish in between. One small pancake-sized plate usually has two pieces of sushi on it. The customers sit at a U-shaped counter, and take the plates they want off of a conveyer belt that is constantly rotating directly in front of them. The type of fish on the plate determines its price, and the price is indicated by the color of the plate. Prices range from 100 yen to 500 yen per plate. After the customer selects a plate, they either use their fingers or a pair of disposable chopsticks to pick up one piece of sushi, dip it into some soy sauce, and then put it in their mouths. If the type of sushi you want to eat isn乫t on the conveyer belt, you can ask a person working behind the counter and they will go get it for you. Green tea is provided free of charge, or you can order Japanese rice wine, a beer or a soft drink to go with your meal.
Recently, many of the revolving sushi bars are offering more than just raw fish to their customers. I have seen such things as deep-fried chicken nuggets, miniature pork cutlets, French fries and a variety of cakes and puddings. Even if you don乫t like raw fish, you can still go to a revolving sushi bar and enjoy a quick meal.
I often go to one of these places to eat lunch, especially when I am in a hurry and don乫t have enough time to order from a menu and wait for my meal to be prepared and served. At a rotating sushi counter, everything is prepared in advance and you simply take what you want as it passes by in front of you. Not only is the food healthy and delicious, but you can also eat your fill in less than 20 minutes for the price of about 1,000 yen.
This is why I am a regular customer of several such restaurants.
Recently, a new branch of the 暯椢 rotating sushi counter restaurant chain opened right across from where I live. Talk about a happy day! Now, I can eat my favorite fast food and only have to walk for about 30 seconds. As you might imagine, since I am a regular customer, and one of the very few non-Japanese who eat there, the shop owner recognizes me and knows what I like to eat.
"Hello Snowman! Would you like to start off with some oily salmon today?" "Yes, please!" I reply and I'm off on another delicious adventure. I can eat almost everything that the sushi restaurant has to offer, but there are still a few things that I don't like very much. I will keep that a secret for now.
