My English translation of the stage play RUN written by Soh Kuramoto

Soh Kuramoto is a very famous writer in Japan. He has written many things for publication, along with stage plays as well as for the movies and television. One of his most widely known television dramas is –k‚Ì‘‚©‚çA From the North Country. This TV drama was not only popular all over Japan, but in many other Asian countries as well. In fact, because of the vast popularity of this TV series, many tourists from all over the world have come to visit Furano, which was the filming location for this drama series. I have had the honor of meeting Soh Kuramoto on several occasions. One of the those occasions was at a performance of of his stage play HASHIRU at the Furano Juku in Furano, Hokkaido. The Furano Juku was so popular that they built a brand new and much larger theater in October of 2000. It is called the Furano Theater Factory and you can visit the website by clicking here. In English, HASHIRU means RUN. This stage play is the story of the two year course of studies at the Furano Juku which is an actors training school. But it is also about the reality of life in post WWII Japan. It talks about how the economy was rebuilt from the ashes of war by the diligent efforts of the Japanese people. Then, after 1990 when the so called bubble economy burst, there were a lot of disillusioned "salary men" who were beginning to lose their jobs because of the bad economic situation. Many people who thought they had a secure job for life, were rudely awakened when they were told that their services were no longer needed at the company. This stage play HASHIRU is a powerfully true, and heart touching story about the importance of working hard and not giving up hope in order to achieve your dreams. I liked the performance so much that I bought the script for $10 and asked the author, Soh Kuramoto, if I could translate it into English and he said OK. The result can be read below. Every year in the springtime, many students from all over Japan come to the Furano Juku with hopes of becoming a rich and famous actor, but only a very few actually make it. This stage play is the true story of their trials and tribulations while considering the backdrop of postwar Japan. Enjoy.

START
Runner #15 pulling herself up from the ground and the coach
Coach:
gYour pace is too fast! Wait! Stop for a second!
(coach hits the floor with a whip)
How many times do I have to tell you? Do you think you can keep up that pace all the way until the end of the race? Huh?
(pause)
You donft understand anything, do you!
(pause)
Give up your dream of winning the race. Just try and finish it. Thatfs good enough. Thatfs all that you can hope for this time.
(pause)
Get into the flow around you,cc and go! Put yourself into the flow of the race and ride it out. Donft think that the other runners around you are your enemies. Your enemy is not around you,cc Ites in a completely different place. Try and find your enemy. Think about that while your are running.h
(pause)
gAre you listening to me? Yuka!h
(Yuka takes off running by herself)
gRun,cc
According to the dictionary erunf means that people and animals move their legs quickly and move forward in a deliberate manner.
(pause)
People,cc everybody,c tries to run through life.
What are they running towards?
------- I donft really know.
What is it all for?
There are people running through life who donft even know that much.
(pause)
As for me,c. Well,c. I used to be the same way.
I graduated from college and got a job at a big company.
It was during that time when Japan was still recovering from the damage it had suffered by defeat in the big war.
Anyway, without knowing why, I started running. Running,cc running and doing my best. I lived that way for almost 40 years. Getting closer and closer to retirement. Today was my last day on the job.
(pause)
Yeah, lately Ifve been really confused.
Even though Ifve reached retirement, should I keep on running? Or, should I just stop around here somewhere, and take a rest?
Thatfs why Ifm just standing around here and waiting.
I donft know what to do.
I want to know the true meaning of what it is to run.
Every year, young people gather here at the Furano Juku, from all over the nation,cc to run.
This race is a bit different from the standard 42.195 kilometer marathon.
Itfs a marathon that continues for a full two years,cc without rest.
You can say itfs a marathon against time.
Last year, for the whole year, I peeked in on the race.
There were quite a few people who dropped out.
I said dropped out but,c that doesnft mean you can abandon the race all together.
eItfs too difficult this year. Ifll try again next year!f
They say that,cc and then stop running.
eThis year I give up already. Ifll do my best next year.f
I understand how they feel.
However, they canft do that during the second year.
Thatfs because they wonft be here to try again for a third year.
Ah,c here they come. The group of runners.h
Runners wearing the black trainers begin
appearing on stage
gWe are from the second year group.h
Runners wearing the white trainers begin
appearing on stage
gItfs our first race this year.h
All of the marathon runners assemble on
Stage
They begin stretching and warming up
in small groups
The person with the starting pistol appears
All of the runners line up at the starting line
Silence
gAnd thus, the race begins.
As expected, the second year upperclassmen have taken up good positions.
However, there are many newcomers running by their sides.
There are always a few of them. Beginners who jump out into an early lead. But most of them canft continue like this. They donft know, do they, how to allocate their strength. Itfs only their desire that drives them on.
(pause)
Letfs try and make a few predictions.
The top contender seems to be number 7, Oshida. Last year he ran a really good race. He is rumored to be the most dangerous runner in the race. Itfs passion. Itfs love. How far will this love go to pull his legs out from under him?
------- But where is he? I still canft see him.
Also,cc
Number 8, Kuroda and number 9, Morikawa.
Whoa! Number 15 is all fired up. Shefs the newcomer, Sasaki. She has a strong character. She doesnft make friends. She is always doing things by herself. She might be the big winner.
Ah, number 7 Oshida is over there. Number 1 Maya is running right along beside him. They seem to be getting along fine together. Shefs making a good showing just as I expected. Shefs also a candidate for first place.
Oh! Therefs number 14, Inaba.
That guy recently met with a misfortune.
His older sister died in a traffic accident. He seems to have been rather distressed about whether or not to drop out of the race. But he decided to run anyway. He pushed aside the objections of his parents and entered the race because is older sister had urged him to do so. Hefs betting everything on this yearfs race.h
gConsequently,cc what can I say,cc
My prediction is that number 7 and number 8 have the best chance of winning. Number 3 and number 14 are the long shots.

First Mark of the Race
The runners appear on stage one after the other and engage in monologues
First group: runners 9, 2, 18 and 15
Runner #9
gItfs a new April. There is still snow on the ground.
But it looks different than last April. Maybe itfs only that I have changed.
Mother!
Ifve finished the first yearfs race but,...
I didnft place well last year. And now, the second yearfs race has started. Last year I was completely hopeless.
I was in love with Shin Chan, a boy who was waiting for me in my home town, I couldnft concentrate on my running at all. This year, Ifll forget about all of that. Ifll ignore it and run.h
Runner #2
gItfs my second marathon. Itfs my last marathon.
Ifm going to fly this year. Right from the start.
No problem. Ifve got lots of muscle.
Ifve been building my body just by working in the fields.
Keiko! You wonft beat me. No way! Ifm different than last year. Much different.h
gDonft put me down. Itfs the first time Ifve run this race, but Ifm no amateur. Ifve been running for a long, long time. I donft think I will be defeated by my upper classmates. Not by their experience. Not even by their stamina.h
gIfm running towards my dream.
Because I believe only in my dream,c I am running.
I hate to hang out with other people.
Anyway, strangers are nothing more than strangers.
The only thing I can believe in is my dream.h
Second group: runners 3,8,5,4 and 11
Runner #3
gThere are a lot of people who only have a dream.
Most people think that if they just see a dream, it will come true.
To tell you the truth, I was that way last year too.
Ifm a bit different this year.
gDonft hurry.
Take your time.
Hold back, donft jump out in front too quickly.
Last year I took the lead early and everybody hated me.
I ignored all of the warnings and set a fast pace.
I was thinking only of myself and self-destructed.
Donft hurry.
Take your time.
Pace yourself.
Run smart.h
gDonft eat.
Donft eat.
Donft eat.
Donft eat.
I am going to lose weight!
No snacks between meals!
I wonft drink soda pop!
I wonft eat potato chips.
So,cc please everybody, donft offer me any.h
gThe lower classmen are running all around me.
The upper classmen are all out of sight.
This yearfs lower classmen are really strong.
They are probably glittering with hope.
(pause)
I was probably the same way last year.
I feel like Ifve grown old during the previous year.h
gI canft forget the humiliation I felt last year.
Even though I had real ability, I was defeated by sleepiness.
(pause)
This year Ifm going to do it.
Ifm going to beat the sleepiness.
appear on stage.
gIfm riding a roller coaster of emotion. Ifm so happy itfs spring that I can hardly contain myself. My body is so charged with energy,cc itfs crazy! But thatfs no problem. Ifm going to run. Ifm going to run like a wild horse. Ifm so happy itfs spring, I can hardly contain myself. Ifm so pumped up,cc Ifm fearless. Ifm going to run. Ifm gonna put the pedal to the metal.h
gIfm depressed. Ifm really depressed. Ifm completely depressed. Ifm always depressed.h
gEver since I was just a small child, everyone said that I was sly. Even on my school report card it was written that my dishonesty was a problem.
I admit it. I am crafty.
After I entered junior high school, there was a notation on my report card that said I did things in a slipshod and makeshift manner.
I kind of like the word eslipshod.f
Ifm going to run this race in a eslipshod mannerf.h
gHavenft you been anaesthetized by civilization?
Which is more important,c your legs or your car?
Which is more important,c water or oil?
Which is more important,c wisdom or knowledge?
Which is more important,c creativity or criticism?
Which is more important,c action or theory?h
gItfs good enough for me to run behind this guy.
Itfs good enough for me if I donft fall too far behind him.
I donft care what anybody else says.
Nobody understands me anyway.
Ifm just going to stare at his back and run.
(pause)
Oh, he has such big strong shoulders and,...
such a feeling of security.h
The 6th group appears on stage.
Runners 25, 6, 31, 16, 19, 13
Runner #6
(Talking about the runner directly in front of him)
gI really like Miss Yamamoto Chiyo. She has such nice hips.
Just the right amount of flesh for my liking.
(pause)
This is not the right time to be thinking about such things.
(pause)
But Ifm going to hold this position and enjoy watching her hips as long as I can.
(pause)
Hips, ho ho ho
Hips, ho ho hoh
The 7th group: Runners 26 and 23
gI made love just before coming here.
My partner was a woman older than me. Another manfs wife.h
gI made love just before coming here too.
My partner was a man. Younger than me.h
The 8th group: Runners 17 and 29
gIfve said it before but,c
If you run out in front of me, Ifm going to punch you out!
Do you understand? Donft you mess with me!
Runner #29
(no response)
I mean it man! There is such a thing as social status, you know. The entire world is a vertical society. If you try and change that,c Ifm going to whack you man.
I swear it!
My dream is to have a character just like the Sumo champion ChiYouTaiKai.h
The 9th Group: Runner #27 only.
Runner #27
gThe new comers this year are really flying.
I was way too pumped up last year.
This year, Ifve got a plan.
During the spring, Ifll just crawl along with everybody else, like a turtle.
When summer comes, Ifll sneak into 3rd or 4th place without anybody even noticing me.
(pause)
In the autumn, I going to change from a turtle into a snake.
Ifm going to slither my way into last place of the lead group. Ifve still got lots of stamina.
Then comes winter.
Winter is a big challenge all by itself. Itfs an explosion.
Red pepper and a pocket-sized heating pad.
Ifve got eem hidden in my pants.
They will help to get me through the cold winter.
(pause)
But as for now, itfs still spring.
And I am a turtle.h
The 10th Group: Runner #14 only
Runner #14
gIf I can just finish the race, thatfs enough.
Thatfs all I want.
Sister!
Thatfs what my sister told me to do.
(pause)
Sister! Why did you have to die?
Where is my sister now?
I wish my sister were here to cheer me on now.
Thatfs the only reason Ifm running.h
The 11th Group: Runners 22, 21, 10, 24, 32, 24, 28, 20 and 30 appear on stage.
gEverybody is really young, arenft they. Yeah. Itfs great to be so vivacious.
But, I donft want to jump out in front from the start of the race. This position is good for now.
Hey! Youfre a bit behind on your rhythm.
If one person goes crazy, everybody goes crazy.
Letfs coordinate our breathing. Follow me.
Huff huff! Huff huff! Huff huff!h

Second Mark of the Race
Background music starts
The voice of a father reading a letter to his son.
VOICE
gYuusaku. Itfs been a rather long time since you left home to go there. I wonder how youfre doing. You are always thinking only about your objective and even though you never contact me, Ifm not worried about you. However, recently I saw you running that marathon on TV and you looked rather thin. Thatfs the first time Ifve seen you with such a drawn face. After your mother saw that, she became very worried. I mean, really worried.
Yuusaku.
Is the race that youfre running now, really such an important race? Canft you get by without being so hard on yourself?h
gFather, donft worry about me.
I have my own way of doing things, you know.
Please tell my mother the same thing.
(pause)
But, to tell you the truth dad, the real reason Ifm running, is to get away from you and mom.
Ifm tired of being spoiled!
Sorry to say it.
But anyway,c
I want to run by myself.h
Runners 9 and 15 have a verbal exchange.
gItfs not smart to get out in front too soon, you know.h

Runner #2
gThatfs right.h
(pause)
Runner #9
gYou know,c Itfs really important to synchronize your pace with that of everyone elsefs.h
Runner #2
gThatfs true but, nobody knows that at the start of the race. All you can think about is taking the lead for yourself.h
Runner #9
gYeah,cc the truth is, Ifm a little bit off of my pace.h
Runner #2
gHey, donft feel down. Youfre surrounded by friends. Wefve all got to work together and help each other.h
Runner #15
gWhat are you talking about you fool?h
(pause)
I donft really want to talk to other people.
These people with me now,c they arenft my friends.
Everybody around me is my enemy.
What good does it do to talk to your enemies?
Enemies are a thing to be crushed.
Enemies are a thing to be hated.
I will use the energy of my hate to spring myself forward. Yeah!h
There is the loud snap as the ACL in #15fs
right knee breaks
Runner #15 stumbles
Runner #9 bumps into #15
Runner #15 falls down.
Runner #2 cannot avoid #15 and runs into her before zooming past.
Runner #15 groaning in pain tries to get back up but canft.
COACHfS VOICE:
gYuka!h
gYuka! Stand up!! Run!!!h
COACHfS VOICE becomes softer:
gWhat ever happened to your self confidence?h
The other runners take off leaving the injured #15 where she lies.
The other runners come by one after the other and running in slow motion, bypass the injured #15
Runner #15 tries again and again to get up but the pain is too much and she canft do it.
The remaining runners all run past #15 in succession
Runner #15 is left where she lies, all by herself and completely alone.

gMy pace is really calm. I am running at my own pace.
I have found my own pace.
(pause)

Runner #21
gHey, staff member! Everybody is bad mouthing me. I know they are. Everybody gathers in the room next to mine and talks about me in hushed voices. They do it all night long! They donft even sleep a wink! Even though Ifm very sleepy, it wakes me up. The other people donft sleep. They never sleep. They stay up all night, every night and then go to work the next day.h
Runner #14 appears

Drinking Water Supply Station
All of the runners appear on stage one after the other running in slow motion. Some of them grab a paper cup or a sponge from the station. Some do not.
In the background, a mother and her daughter are playing with fireworks
Autumn

The 5th Station
gYesterday, I got a letter from my daughter. It was the first letter from her in three years. She told me that she had given birth to a child. I,cc I started crying, spontaneously.
(pause)
It seems my wife had already heard the news.
Somehow, I was vaguely aware of this. But I,cc I was determined to ignore it.
I loved her you know. My daughter,c that is.
Thatfs why I worked so hard for all these years.
(pause)
What did my daughter see in that man?
What was it about that man that my daughter found attractive?
I guess it must be pure love.
She eloped with her boyfriend.
(pause)
It was a big shock for me.
(long pause)
The young people who are running here.
And their parents. Probably feel the same waycc Donft they?
(pause)
Thatfs the way they are, these children here who single mindedly devote themselves to the illusion they have as their dream.
(pause)
However,cc
Now, I too am thinking about such things.
(pause)
Even if it is just an illusion, it is better to have some kind of a dream than none at all.
Itfs good to have a dream with a goal in mind.
I wonder now if I ever had such a dream.
At times I think that I never did.
The company. I always did everything for the company. I feel as if I never had any dream other than that.h
The sound of footsteps is heard from far away and then comes closer and closer.
The voice of runner # 9 is heard.
gShin Chan! I havenft gotten a letter from you in 3 months!h
Itfs already autumn here in Furano.
The mountain behind our performing arts school looks really impressive.
It is ablaze with vivid reds and yellows. It reminds me of the many times we visited Iwate Mountain together.
Shin Chan. Can I still believe in you?
(pause)
I still have about half a year to go.
Ifm still running. Amid the autumn colors.h
gThe other day, I had that horrible dream again.
(pause)
The dream where I see the time when Yuka fell down.
I wonder if Yuka gave up on finishing the race then?
Or, maybe she is still running towards somewhere?
(pause)
Kaori who was also running with us at that time is really lagging behind too.
The person who is running with me now is a new comer this year, Yuusaku.
But Yuusaku looks like he is having a hard time.
gThe back of Eiko who is running in front of me, suddenly gets bigger,cc and then it gets farther away.
(pause)
The body of that person who was running behind me was,c And also the body of Otani was,cch
gcc They just floated out in front of me and then just drifted away.
(pause)
Father!
(pause)
My feet.
There are holes at the tips of my toes and the oil in my body is flowing out!
(Runner #18 begins to sob)

To tell the truth,c everybody was just messing with me.
Nobody was taking me seriously! Nobody!
(pause)

My upper classmen are great! They are a cut above!
Their training is much harsher than mine!
(Runner 18 begins to weep bitterly)
People who are harsh to others donft get ahead.
Only people who are tough on themselves get ahead.
(crying more loudly than before)
Letfs all clap for all the tough people in the world!
Letfs all clap for our upper classmen!
Clap!
