Honors the late civil rights leader. It became a federal holiday in 1986.

Marches and speeches by prominent African Americans and others who honor the memory of MLK, a famous African-American clergyman and civil rights leader who preached social change through non-violent means.  He was assassinated in 1968.

February 22 is the birthday of the first president of the USA, George Washington.  Abraham Lincoln’s birthday is February 12.  The two were combined to make President’s day.

春分の日

春分の日は自然をたたえ、生物をいつくしむ国民の祝日。昼と夜の長さがほぼ同じになる日が年に２回ある。そのうちの一つ。（もう一つは秋分の日）

この日を境にして夏至まで昼間が徐々に長くなり、夜が短くなっていく。日本で昼夜がほとんど等しくなるのは春分より３日前。

Easter Sunday

Celebrates the Christian belief in the resurrection of Jesus Christ.  Many people go to a sunrise service at their church or at an outdoor location with the church members.  Children have Easter Egg Hunts and receive Easter Baskets full of candy, mostly in the shape of rabbits or eggs.  The hardboiled eggs are dyed many colors and hidden around the house and yard by the Easter Bunny.  Children look for the eggs and put them in a basket.

みどりの日

昭和天皇陛下の誕生日

昭和天皇の誕生日で祝日であったものを、天皇が崩御（ほうぎょ）の後1989年に国民の祝日の一つでみどりの日とした。これは昭和天皇が自然を愛したことに由来するとされる。

5月3日

憲法記念日

昭和22年(19４7年)5月3日に日本国憲法が発布(はっぷ)された。それを記念して昭和23年7月の「国民の祝日に関する法律」で祝日と定められた。

5月5日

こどもの日

戦後新しい時代には、新しい祝日をと国民アンケートを行った際､３月３日の女の子の節句､５月５日の男の子の節句をいずれも祝日にという声があがる。

結果的に両方あわせて５月５日に男女に関係なく「こどもの日」を祝日とすることとなる。

「海の恩恵に感謝するとともに、海洋国日本の繁栄を願う」国民の祝日。元々は「海の記念日」という記念の日だったが、1996年から国民の祝日「海の日」となる。当初は７月２０日だったが、祝日法の改正により今年より7月第3月曜日となった。

お盆は各地方、宗派によって様々なしきたりや習慣がある。全国的にみれば８月13日から４日間行われるところが多い。墓参りや精霊流しなどが行われる。この期間に先祖の霊を迎え供養する。

 昭和３９年に日本で初めて開催された五輪大会、オリンピック東京大会の開会式が行われた日で、輝かしい成果と感激を記念し国民がスポーツに親しみ健康な心身を培う趣旨で、昭和41年に国民の祝日に制定された。開会式をこの日に決めたのは､日本の観測史上一番晴れる確率が高い日だったため。今年から10月10日より10月第2月曜日となる。運動不足の人はスポーツの良さを再発見しましょう！

Veterans Day to honor all men and women who have served America in its armed forces. Veterans Day Parades.  Fly the Stars and Stripes. The president places a wreath of flowers on the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery which is across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C.

Thanksgiving Day

A federal holiday

Original celebration dates back to 1621 when Puritans came to North America. About half of them died that winter. After that the local Indians helped them learn how to hunt and farm in the new world.

Family members gather together for a big roast turkey dinner complete with cranberry sauce, yams or potatoes and pumpkin pie. Thanksgiving day parades and professional football games are nationally broadcast on radio, TV and Internet.  Famous cartoon characters appear as large floating balloons in the parades.

天皇誕生日は、文字通り天皇の誕生日を祝う日。

１２月２３日皇居で一般参賀が行われる。

天皇皇后両陛下､皇太子同妃両殿下､秋篠宮同妃両殿下､紀宮殿下がお出ましになる。

平成に入った際、崩御した昭和天皇の誕生日は「みどりの日」とされ国民の祝日の一つとして残されるよう、祝日法が改正された。

ツリーを飾り、ケーキやごちそうを用意し、パーティを企画したりなど、一大イベントになっている。

この日のためにプレゼントを買い､プランを立てたりと老若男女が心ときめかす。ツリーのライトに照らされ、一人一人が素敵な思い出を作る日。

Many churches have a special Christmas Eve Service where Christmas Carols are sung.

It was the night before Christmas, when all thru the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.  The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, in hope that Saint Nichols soon would be there.

冠婚葬祭

妊娠すると、役所で母子健康手帳をもらう。安産のためマタニティ教室やスイミングに通う。母子ともに健康でいられるよう、食事やライフスタイルに気を遣う。お腹に赤ちゃんがいる時から子育てが始まっていると英語の読み聞かせなどの胎教を始めるお母さんも。

When a woman gets pregnant,

Her family and friends hold a party called a baby shower where they bring gifts for the soon to be born baby.

子供が生まれたら、生まれた日を含め１４日以内に出生届を提出する。男児は生後３２日目、女子は３３日目に氏神様にお宮参りして健全な成長を祈願する。

When the baby is born,

The father hands out cigars with a label that says, “It’s a boy!” or “It’s a girl!”

高等学校または大学を卒業すると、就職する前に仲の良い友達と海外や国内に卒業旅行へと旅立つ人が急増中。

When a student graduates from high school and or college, they usually take a vacation to some place and celebrate.

結婚は、個々人により求めるスタイルが異なり色々な選択肢が増えてきている。神前式、キリスト教式などで仲人を依頼し､発起人を立てて結婚式場やホテル、教会での挙式を挙げるのが一般的。最近は､海外での挙式やレストランを貸切にしてパーティ形式にしたり、結婚衣装の写真だけ撮影し、あとは身内だけでお祝いするといったアットホームな挙式を望むカップルも少なくない。会費は招待制､会費制など。式を挙げずに籍だけいれるカップルもいる。

When two people get married they have a wedding ceremony at a church or in some special outdoor location such as a big garden or a park.  Some people get married in unusual places or situations such as SCUBA diving or sky diving.

After the wedding, the couple goes on a honeymoon vacation to some nice place.

亡くなったときは、7日以内に死亡届を提出。年金受給者なら社会保険事務所で手続きが必要。葬式の手配など悲しい中でやらなくてはならないことが実に多い。葬式が済んだら、すぐに初七日がくる。その後四十九日、亡くなってまるまる一年目の命日に一周忌、二年目に三回忌、以後同じように実質経過年数プラス1の計算で七回忌、十三回忌、十七回忌、二十五回忌、三十三回忌、五十回忌と法要が続く。

When a person dies,

A funeral is held, usually at a church or at a funeral parlor.  The body is taken in a casket and buried in a grave plot at a cemetery.  Flowers are placed on the grave from time to time but not at regular intervals as in Japan.
