SEE HOKKAIDO

2005 August 31 Wednesday.

I got up at 7:00, and took some more cold medicine and drank some tea.  I have to teach a class at the Kosei Nursing School JA厚生連旭川厚生看護専門学校 starting at 8:50.  As the cold medicine kicked in, I was feeling a bit less stuffy, but very sleepy.  I wonder if it is safe to drive my car?  Well, I did.  Today's topic?  Summer vacation, of course.  I even brought a map of Hokkaido with me as well as a one page summary of which roads I traveled and which places I visited.  I told the students, in English, about some of the things I saw and did, then I asked each of them to write a mini essay about their summer vacations.  That was all finished at 10:20 so, I drove back home, ate some food, and took a 2 hour nap.  Back up and ready for classes from 15:00 until 20:00.  At about 14:50, I got a call from the local FM radio station, FMりべーる83.7Mhz   They want me to be on a noon time radio show for a few minutes tomorrow, so I said that I would come to the radio station and do it.  I haven't been on a radio show for about 5 years.  I actually had my own 30 minute radio show at this very same station from 1995 until 2000, so I am familiar with the procedures.  The lady on the phone said that to main topic will be about what men eat for lunch (sounds original) and that I would also have plenty of time to talk about my classroom and my website.  Sounds good.  See you there.  If you want to listen to this radio show, please tune into FMりーべる83.7Mhz at 12:00 noon tomorrow.  Thanks.

2005 August 30 Tuesday.

I think I need to start wearing warmer clothing in the evening, because I caught a whopper of a cold last night.  When I woke up this morning, I couldn't stop sneezing.  It sounded like World War III.  I didn't have any classes until 15:00, which was a good thing for both me and the students.  When my last class of the day was finished at 20:00, I did some work on the PC and then tried to go to bed early.  However, one side of my nose was running like a water fountain, and the other side was plugged up like the Chubetsu Dam.  Because I could hardly breathe, I couldn't sleep very well. In fact, I really didn't sleep at all.  Restless in Asahikawa.

2005 August 29 Monday.

First business of the day, the English Friendship Class 英語ふれあい  at Mebae Kindergarten めばえ幼稚園.  Today's topic was summer vacation of course.  I have made some laminated A4 sized flash cards of different summer time activities as well some of the various weather conditions.  I used these cards, again today, to teach the kids some basic vocabulary and short phrases.  When that was all finished at about 11:15, I came back to my classroom to eat lunch and get ready for the 英会話を楽しむ会 at the 神楽公民館.  That started at 13:30.  Today, Mrs. S brought everyone a copy of her new comic book called Pat Chan.  It is the true story of the high school student from Asahikawa's sister city of Bloomington-Normal Illinois in the USA. who stayed at her house for part of his 11 month stay in the city.   It took her about 2 months to finish it by working on it for about 3 hours everyday.  This is the comic book she wants me to translate into English.  Which I will do as soon as I can.  I guess I too, need to work on it a little bit every day, because I have a lot of other things to do as well.  I'll do my best.  My last class of the day was with a young couple who come to my classroom about once a week.  The husband works at a very large American pharmaceutical company and the wife is currently a full time housewife.  Today, they had some big news.  The wife is 3 months pregnant!  Congratulations!  Soon to be a 3 person family.  After that class was over, I went out for a one hour walk.  It was kind of humid today and I sweat a lot during the walk.  Did I lose weight too?  No!  Lights out a 24:00

2005 August 28 Sunday.

Another day spent in the adventure land of computer animation software.  I made a simple movie to teach a child how to say the names of  15 basic colors in English.  Next I will add some interactivity so that the child can play with the colored objects, and take a quiz to see if they remembered the English names for each color.  Enough time spent on the PC today, it's out for a cycling tour from 18:00 - 20:00.  What a beautiful evening for a bike ride.  The temperature was 21 degrees C, and there was no wind.  A lot of people were out walking around on the pedestrian mall known as Kaimono Koen.   There were even covered  tables and benches along most of the mall.    I've never seen so many there before.   After the two hour ride, it was time to take a shower and relax. Lights out at 24:00.

2005 August 27 Saturday.

The rain has finally stopped.  No floods.  Just good old autumn rains.  Today, cloudy with partial sunshine.   I took advantage of the still warm air and did a few hours of reading out on the deck.  I read a book about how to use the Macromedia FLASH based  software called Captivate.  First objective, make a banner ad for my classroom, and put it on the top of the front page of this website.   After about 8 hours of reading about it and then actually using the software to create the animated banner ad, as a first experiment with flash/captivate, I finally made one that works.  You may have seen it at the top of the home page on this website.  The simple snowman was drawn using FreeHand.  He doesn't ski very smoothly, does he.  Hey, it's my very first attempt at computer animation.  I'll get better.  The rest of the movie showing only text, is not too bad.  The amazing amount of animated text capabilities in this software makes it really fun to use.  I'll be making another movie tomorrow, Sunday.     Dinner tonight:    Thai Curry and brown rice.  Yum, yum.   Lights out at 23:30.

2005 August 26 Friday.

It's getting cloudy and rain is on the way.  Coming in from Sapporo.  There is a typhoon down south that is driving it.  First class of the day was at the Hokkaido Prefecture Nursing Academy of Asahikawa 北海道立旭川高等看護学院。Today's topic?  Summer vacation!  Of course.  I gave each student a one page summary of where I went driving to and camping at, and then I asked each of them to tell me what they did during their summer vacation.  After each student spoke a brief summary of what they did, I gave them the rest of the class time to write a mini essay about it.  Amazingly, there were no questions today.  The students quietly used their dictionaries to look up words and phrases, and write their own compositions.  As I looked around the room during this time, I saw an A4 sized piece of paper on the bulletin board that said; HOMEWORK Summer 2005.  I put on my reading glasses to take a closer look, and was amazed at the amount and detail of the assignments.  Getting this done on time, would take a considerable effort.  In fact, today was one of the deadlines for one the several reports.  One boy, skipped my class today so that he could work on his report.  I think he made a good choice. Most of the other students had already finished all of their homework.  Good Job!!!    Anyway, after that class was finished at 10:30,  it was back to my classroom for classes from 13:30 until 20:00.  As time passed from afternoon into evening, the rain got stronger.  A typical autumn rain.  Summer is officially over for this year.   Time to change wardrobes.   Lights out at 24:00.

2005 August 25 Thursday.

Another beautiful autumn day.  Classes from 15:00 until 20:00.  After that I finally finished putting together the photo galleries from my 6 day 5 night summer road trip.  You can see the photos by clicking here.  I was also planning to go to Takasago Onsen, which is very near my house and reasonably priced, but by the time I finished all of my work today, it was already 25:00!  The place closes at 26:00 so this was no point in rushing over there tonight.  But, I will be going there soon.  It's a very nice place to relax.  Try it sometime.  Lights out at 25:30.

2005 August 24 Wednesday.

Another beautiful autumn day.  Warm sunshine with a cool breeze.  A perfect day.  A blue sky with puffy clouds, complete with the red and orange sunset.  Autumn is number one.  These are the best of times.  Another autumn, another harvest.  It's the prize that we have all been working for during the rest of the entire year.  Tasty food in abundance.       After my last class was finished at 20:00, I went for a walk along the cycling road that runs along the bank of the Biei River and then the Chubetsu River.  The smells in the air are wonderful this time of year.  In the winter, the air here basically has no smell.  Except for engine exhaust fumes.  In autumn, it's very fragrant.  It was partly cloudy this evening, but there were enough clear areas to enjoy watching the planets, stars and the rising moon.  The sound of the rivers' rushing waters was also nice.  After about an hour of walking, it was back to the classroom to do some research on the web.  Lights out at 25:00.

2005 August 23 Tuesday.

It's amazing but true.  It's like summer ended on August 22 and then autumn started on the very same day.  No big surprise, it happens this way every year.  One day, it's hot,  humid and sunny,  you're sweating like a pig, begging for cooler weather, and the next day, your wish comes true.  The air is noticeably cooler, and the smell of autumn is in the air.  You know what I mean.  The air feels and smells different.  You know, from your animal instinct, that the seasons have changed.  Again.  Just like clockwork.    Autumn is my favorite season.  It's not too hot and not too cold, there is a lot of delicious,  just harvested, fresh food, and the sky is orange-blue and beautiful.  Another sure sign that autumn has arrived, is the appearance of the Kirin Beer Company's Aki Aji, the taste of autumn, in the cooler at your local supermarket.  See the photo at the upper left for details.  They do this every year, at about this time, and I always buy and drink it.  Each year, they change the design of the can in some subtle way, but it always has the same theme of the red and orange autumn leaves.  The writing on the can says "1.3% more malt than our regular beer."  That sounds nice, and it does taste good, but it is not a 100% all malt beer like Sapporo Classic or Sapporo Yebisu.  It's not the Real McCoy, but it still tastes pretty good.   On another note, my teaching day didn't start until 18:00 and was finished by 20:00.  I used my free time to read more about the implementation of e-learning on the internet.  A fascinating subject, and one that I need to do a whole lot more research into.  The thing that I really like about this field of endeavor is that one person can put it all together by themselves, if they have the right hardware and software, and enough time to make it happen.  I have all of the above, except for the abundant time.  A lot of people are asking me to do a lot of different things for them, and I will gladly do them, but I need to use my time wisely.  As does everyone else who lives on this planet.  Living is learning, and time is all we have. How much time?  That all depends upon the individual.  But the bottom line is still the same for everyone.  How did you spend the time of your life?  You will only know that, in the end.   Lights out at 24:00.

2005 August 22 Monday.

My back to work day started off with a bang.  At 10:00 I had an English Friendship Class 英語ふれあい at the Chestnut Tree Kindergarten くりの木幼稚園.  I played the guitar and we all sang some songs.  On the way back to my classroom from there at about 11:15, I stopped by Kentucky Fried Chicken to try out their new Southern BBQ Twister.  I bought two of them.  It was one too many.  This new flavor is not to my liking.  I guess I'll have the pepper and mayo one next time, like I usually do.  After I got back to my classroom, I had about an hour to clean the place up and then relax a bit.  My next class was at 13:30 at the 神楽公民館英会話を楽しむ会.  As usual, the members had a lot of interesting stories to tell.  One of the members, Mrs. S., is a very talented artist.  She has shown us some of her paintings before.  Today, she brought an original comic book that she had just drawn.  It is really excellent.  She asked me to translate it into English.  I said that I will, but it will take a lot of time, because I can only work on it a little bit each day.  I have a lot of other things that I must do, including updating this website every day.  I'll do my best and get it done as soon as I can.  よろしくね。After that class, it was back to my classroom for straight classes from 15:00 until 20:00.  When all of the classes were finished, I got back to work on finishing up the photo galleries that I am making of the photos that I took during my 6 day seaside drive along the coastline of eastern and northern Hokkaido.  There are so many photos, that I have to divide them up into 4 separate galleries.  This means that I need to make a main menu page, and one page each for the 4 galleries.  It's not difficult to do, but it does take time.  And time is all we have.  Let's make good use of it.  Oh by the way, now that autumn is just around the corner, and the air is getting cooler, the crickets コロウギ are rubbing their wings together, and making music.  This is an event that I enjoy every year.  In years past, I have even gone so far as to capture some of them and keep them as pets.  In that case, they can live well into November.  But if you make the mistake of putting a male and a female together in the same cage, the female will let the male do his thing, and then kill him.  Life is so cruel.  But that's how it really works, doesn't it.     Lights out at 25:00.

2005 August 21 Sunday.

Rain.  And lots of it.  It started out light in the morning and as afternoon and evening came about it got heavier and heavier.  At about 20:00 I took out the trash for the next day, and even during that short walk, I got soaked.  It hasn't rained for many days and today's downpour was badly needed.  Especially by the farmers.  I wonder if any of the rivers flooded?  Lights out at 23:00.

2005 August 20 Saturday.

I was up at 8:00 today because I have a private lesson at 10:00.  This family lives in Kamifurano 上富良野 so they have to come a long way to take their English lessons.  Fortunately, the children's grandmother and grandfather live in Asahikawa so they have other things to do while they are in this city.  After that lesson was finished at 11:00, I ate breakfast and watched some news and other programs on TV.  Watching TV makes me sleepy so I took a nap for about 2 hours.  After I got up again, I surfed the web and also continued editing the photos I took during my road trip.  As you may know, a photograph on the web has to be able to download fast as well as look good.  When I take photos with my digital cameras, I always have them set at the FINE setting which is the second best quality that the camera can take.  However, if I were to use the photos from the camera as is, not only would they download very slowly, but also they would be very very big and you would have to scroll up and down as well as back and forth to see the entire image.  That is because each photo is about 1.2 megabytes.  In order to solve this problem, I resize each and every photo to 800 pixels by 600 pixels.  In so doing, the photos are still big enough to see detail but small enough (about 220kb) to download quickly.  In the past, I had to resize each and every photo by hand using Microsoft PhotoDraw.  Fortunately, I recently purchased Macromedia Studio MX 2004.  One of the programs in this software suite is called Fireworks.  Fireworks has a batch processing function that allows me to resize all of the photos in a certain folder and put them in another separate folder automatically.  I keep the original photos as they were, plus I get a new copy of each at 800 by 600 pixels.  For a group of 100 photos, the whole batch process takes only about 20 seconds.  This is a huge time saver.  After the photos are downsized, I need to adjust the brightness and contrast of each one by hand.  Plus I may put a caption in the photo to tell the viewer where it was taken.  This is what I have been doing off and on for the past 3 or 4 days.  I hope to be finished by today or tomorrow.  Lights out at 25:00.

2005 August 19 Friday.

Another cloudy day.  I spent most of the day editing even more of the photos that I took during my 6 day road trip.  At about 18:00 I decided to got for a bicycle ride.   At about 18:30 it started to rain.  Of course I got wet, but it felt good because it wasn't cold.  When I got home, I changed my clothes, and started cleaning up my classroom.  I had to vacuum and mop the floor as well as put all the stuff away that was laying all around.  I have a private lesson tomorrow at 10:00 so the place must be looking good.  After that, I drank some beer and played the 6 string folk guitar for a few hours.  Lights out at 23:00.

2005 August 18 Thursday.

A cloudy and somewhat cooler day today.  I got up at about 10:00 and surfed the web for a while.  Then, I edited some more photos that I took during my most recent road trip and also did some more reading about e-learning.  While I was eating lunch between 15:00 and 16:00, I watched a very interesting show on the Discovery Channel about the amazing inventions of ancient China.  It seems like they invented almost everything, and many hundreds or thousands of years before the west did.  Civilizations rise and fall.  Maybe they are getting ready to be number one again.  After lunch it was time for a short nap and then back to editing photos.  Lights out at 24:00.

2005 August 17 Wednesday.

I woke up at about 8:00 and made a huge pot of coffee.  I usually don't drink much coffee, but today I needed a lift.  The sunburn and the bug bites I got during my road trip weren't feeling much better.  I sat down at my PC to edit the hundreds of photos I took during the trip.  This will take some time.  At about 12:00, I decided to take a bicycle ride and get some exercise for my legs.  Of course I wore a long sleeved shirt to protect my sun burnt arms, but I didn't want to wear long pants because it is too hot.  I rode around for about an hour. Then I came back, took a cold tub and sat around editing photos.  Also I did some reading about e-learning.  I went for another bicycle ride just as the sun set.  It was cool and the air smelled really nice the big bright moon was out to light the way.  I used to do a lot of night cycling during my youth in Spokane Washington, and tonight's ride had that same kind of feeling.  A good feeling.  When I got back at about 20:00.  The wife and I sat out on our veranda and cooked some food using a gas burner instead of charcoal.  It was a nice relaxing day.  Lights out at 23:00.

2005 August 11 thru 16,  I'm on a road trip along the entire coastline of eastern and northern Hokkaido.  Read about it by clicking here.

05 August 10 Wednesday.

I was planning to leave on a seaside road trip this morning, but my guts were in bad shape and the last thing I wanted to do was spend hours driving a van.  I will try again tomorrow morning.  I spent the whole day surfing the web and reading various books about e-learning.  Sitting on the veranda and relaxing in the warm summer air reminded me of my youth in Spokane Washington USA.  Summers there were always hot and dry, and the warm wind today brought back those memories.  I wish I could still go out in the midday sun and ride a bicycle for hours on end.   But, I can't.  So instead, I went for a walk at about 18:00.  The sunset was fantastic and the air was warm and quiet.  What a nice place to be right now.  Getting back home at about 19:30, I sat down at my PC to catch up on this blog, and make final preparations for my seaside road trip which starts tomorrow morning.  Lights out at 24:00.

2005 August 9 Tuesday.

My day started out with a private lesson at 10:00.  These two grade school children come all the way from Kamifurano 上富良野 to take English lessons at my classroom.  The family has lived for 3 years in the USA near NYC.  They just came back to Hokkaido early this year and they want to be sure that their children don't forget how to speak English while they are living in Japan.  It is very easy to forget a language if you don't use it all the time.  I know from personal experience.  After the private lesson was finished at 11:00, I had to get busy and finish the final grades for my students at Asahikawa University.  That took about two hours.  Then is was lunch time and another hot, lazy afternoon relaxing in a netted beach chair.  I can only do this type of thing a few weeks out of the year.  Either I'm too busy, or the weather is too cold.  I used the rest of the day to plan the route for my seaside road trip that starts tomorrow morning.     Lights out at 23:00.

2005 August 8 Monday.

Finally, a day of relaxation.  Very sunny and hot all day.  My first order of business was to get out the water hose and clean off my balcony deck.  What a messy condition it is in.  I haven't hosed it down for about 2 months.  For about 90 minutes, I used soap, water, a brush and a squeegee, and got the whole place spic and span.  Then it was time to go visit the family grave site お墓参り.  So that's what me and the wife did.  It's up on a big hill which overlooks the city of Asahikawa.  A place called Kanon Dai.   We did the usual stuff that people do when they visit a grave site in Japan and then we went back to our classroom after about one hour.    It was about 18:00 and time to relax on the newly cleaned veranda.  Oh what a wonderful feeling, and the Sapporo All Malt Classic Beer tastes good too.  Tomorrow I have a private lesson at 10:00.  I need to clean up the classroom too.  Lights out at 24:00.

2005 August 7 Sunday.

I woke up at about 9:00, took a shower and a cold bath and dressed up in my Jinbei.  The vocalist came by to pick me up at 9:45, and we were off the Asahikawa Ginza Tanabata Matsuri.  From about 10:00 until 11:00, we practiced our 5 songs one more time at Big Bag which is very nearby.  Convinced that we could make an acceptable performance, we packed up and went over to the  stage area to relax and wait our turn on stage.  The first group played starting at 11:30.  Our turn came at about 13:30.  We did our 5 songs with almost no mistakes and let the next group take the stage.  I really enjoyed today's live.  I haven't played in a band since about 25 years ago.  At that time, I played lead guitar in a rock and roll band.  Nowadays, I think I like playing the bass guitar the best.  Finally after all of the bands and a few walk-in's had done their gigs, there was a lottery drawing to give away prizes.  The lottery tickets were passed out to people every time they bought some food or drink items, so there were some people who had a lot of tickets.  Those people won a lot of prizes.  My wife even won a DVD player.  We already have one so we will give this new one to my wife's mother.  After the prize drawing, we all helped take down the stage and put away the chairs and other audio equipment.  Finally at about 19:00, I was feeling rather tired so the wife and I got in a taxi and came home.  After I came home, I played the bass guitar some more while listening to a SPITZ CD.  I had a really good time today.  You can see photos of today's event by clicking here.   Lights out at 24:00.

2005 August 6 Saturday.

Today is the 60th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima 廣島原爆投下.  Some people say it was necessary to end the war quickly.  It was not.  Today is the last day of band practice before the mini live tomorrow.  We went out to a place in Higashi Asahikawa, in the industrial district.  There, on the second floor of a heavy equipment repair shop, is a band practice room.  There are amplifiers, a drum set, a grand piano, connecting cords, everything but the musical instruments.  We started practice at about 19:00 and finished at about midnight.  The room was very hot.  Because I had to stand up almost the entire time, my feet became rather sore because I am so overweight.  Anyway, we decided to have another short practice session tomorrow morning at 10:00.  After the vocalist drove me back to my classroom, I sat down, put my feet up and drank some ice cold beers.  Lights out at 03:00.

2005 August 5 Friday.

And it continues to be hot and humid.  Again, I practiced the bass guitar for most of the morning.  At about 17:30, the wife an I walked downtown to see the second day of the Asahikawa Summer Festival.  As you know, today's main even is the YOSAKOI.  The costumes and dances that these groups do are utterly enchanting.  I took about 70 photos of the event which you can see by clicking here.   As we walked down 3 Jodori towards the main festival area, we saw our good friends, the Baba's, owners of Pub Restaurant Ohfune.  They were sitting at a table at one of the outdoor BBQ stands.  We sat down and joined them for a while.  After about 20 minutes, I went to Ohfune to meet the rest of the family members.  The second son was working behind the 1st floor counter as usual, and the first son was in the upstairs kitchen, as usual.  After about 30 minutes of conversation, I excused myself so that I could go take photos of the main event.  Again today, I wore a Jinbei 甚平.  This type of traditional Japanese clothing is very practical and comfortable.  A lot of people were looking at me and smiling.  They don't often see a non-Japanese looking person in such garb.  Neither do I.  After I finished taking photos, I went back to the outdoor BBQ stand were my wife and the Baba Family were sitting.  After another round of beers, we all walked over to the Oden Restauant  Ippei 一平.  I have been here a few times before and the owner knows me.  We drank some shochu 焼酎 and talked about various things.  After about an hour, I and my wife went back to Ohfune and ate some really delicious foods and talked to the owners and staff members.  At about 22:30, it was time to call it a night and my wife and I walked back home in the warm night air.  We could clearly see the stars and planets.  It was a truly magical evening.  Lights out at 25:00.

2005 August 4 Thursday.

Yeah! It stopped raining.  But now it is really hot and humid again. YUCK.  Time to turn on the AC cooler and practice the base guitar.  Today, I didn't really practice for the mini live on Sunday, I just played the bass along with 3 SPITZ CDs, most of the songs only once.  It took about 3 hours and I learned some new riffs and patterns.  After a cold tub and a shower, I changed my clothes into a Jinbei 甚平.  I had it special made for me about 3 years ago.  I'm too big to buy one off the rack at the store.  Then the wife and I walked down to the river bank at Tokiwa Park to see the big fireworks display that started at 19:45.  It was wonderful.  There were even some new types of fireworks that have a brighter white light than I have ever seen before.  I took my camera with me, but I didn't take any photos this year.  You can see the photos that I took of the same event in 2002 by clicking here.  I was having too much fun just watching the light show. At 20:45 when the show ended, we walked back home again.  Tomorrow we will go again and I'll take lots of photos of the various sights and events.  Tomorrow there will be a big YOSAKOI dance parade.  Some of the costumes that these groups have are fantastic.  I'll post a new photo gallery in the near future.

2005 August 3 Wednesday.

Raining again, and even harder than yesterday.  I guess I'll be staying inside most of the day.  Again today, I did various things for the classroom and again I found myself watching TV.  Today, there were some movies on that I had never seen before, so I wasted about 4 hours watching 2 movies.  The first one was Pee Wee's Big Adventure.  If you haven't seen this movie yet, don't bother.  It is super silly and not very funny.  I give it a double thumbs down.  The other one was The Devil's Own with Brad Pitt and Harrison Ford.  Not bad.  A fairly interesting movie.  The only problem I had with it was Brad Pitt's Irish accent.  I couldn't  understand a bloody thing he was sayin'!  I'm serious!  I had to read the Japanese subtitles.  Since this was a broadcast and not a DVD, I couldn't stop the movie and rewind it so that I could listen to the incomprehensible parts again.  I remember the same situation a few years ago when I rented the video  "The Full Monty".  The heavy British cockney accent was impossible for me to understand.  Even if I would rewind the tape and try listening again.  I had to read the Japanese subtitles.  I wonder if they had English subtitles for audiences in the USA and elsewhere?   With so much free time, I even did some cooking today!  I like to cook, but I usually don't have time to do so except during summer and/or winter vacations.  Today I made shrimp fried rice using brown rice.  Tomorrow, I will make Thai style ginger and mint chicken.  There are a lot of mint leaves growing all over this city so I make this dish several times during the summer.  It is one of my favorites.  I hope it stops raining by tomorrow because that is the start of the Asahikawa Summer Festival with a big fireworks display starting at 19:45.  I think I'll make a Teru Teru Boozu and hang it by the window.  Lights out at 25:00.

2005 August 2 Tuesday.

Rain and even some distant lightning in the evening.  Not such a good day to be outside so I spent the day indoors doing various things.  I even watched some TV!  I seldom watch it, but with a lot of free time on my hands and something to eat, I sat down and watched K1 kick boxing for about an hour.  What a brutal sport.  These guys obviously train long and hard to get in shape for this sport.  Some of the punches and kicks that they can take and still remain standing, it is amazing.  I wouldn't last one second in the ring with those guys.  I did try my hand at regular boxing when I was about 20 years old.  I wasn't very good at it because I would get tired out too quickly.  And at that time in my life, I went running every day!  A sportsman, I am not.  No cycling today.  Too much rain.  Lights out at 24:00.

2005 August 1 Monday.

Yet another hot and humid day.  I had the AC cooler on all day and all night.  I took about 3 hours during the morning to finish editing the photos I took on July 25 thru 27 at the Shiretoko Peninsula.  You can see the photo gallery by clicking here.  At about 15:00, I decided to go cycling.  I certainly need the exercise.  However, it was very hot so I did my cycling very slowly.  I spent about 3 hours riding around by the river banks.  It was a nice feeling.  After that, I rode back home, took a cold shower, cold tub soak and drank an ice cold Sapporo Classic. It tasted soooooooo good.  Time to practice the bass guitar again.  Only 6 days until the live stage.  I don't want to make any mistakes on live day.  Lights out at 25:00
